Kaipara District’s new Council has
officially taken office, following a
swearing-in ceremony at the
Matakohe War Memorial Hall at
1.30pm
on
Wednesday
12
November.
The afternoon’s formalities began
with an opening karakia led by
Tawhiri Littlejohn (Te Uri-o-Hau),
followed by an energetic kapa haka
by Dargaville High School and
Dargaville Intermediate School
students.
Voters delivered five new councillors for this term: Luke
Canton, Joesephine Nathan, Denise Rogers, Mike
Schimanski, and Snow Tane. Craig Jepson, Gordon
Lambeth, Jonathan Larsen and
Rachael Williams return to council
after having served previous terms.
Chief Executive Jason Marris
officially opened the inaugural
council meeting before inviting
Mayor Jonathan Larsen to make his
statutory declaration. Mayor Larsen
then invited all eight councillors on
stage to be sworn into office.
Mayor Larsen returns to council for
his fifth term, including most
recently as deputy mayor. In his
inaugural address, he reflected on his
deep connections with Kaipara
District.
Larsen grew up on a farm at Topuni, attending Kaiwaka
Primary and Otamatea High School. His first two terms on
Council were as an Otamatea ward councillor, until
population growth resulted in the creation of a Kaiwaka-
Mangawhai ward which he served in for a further two terms.
“Kaipara is a vast and unique district, and it’s an honour to
be elected as its new mayor,” said Mayor Larsen.
Mayor Larsen thanked the community for electing such a
talented group of councillors. “The Council you see before
you are without exception all passionate about the Kaipara
and doing their best for the district. They are all committed
to leading our district forward in a united way.”
Mayor Larsen also outlined some of his key priorities for the
2025-2028 triennium, including improving the resilience of
Kaipara’s roading network, rates affordability, clear
communication on Council expenditure, and navigating
upcoming water reforms.
The
official
afternoon
was
completed with the singing of the
national anthem, whakaaria mai
(which was led most ably by
Mayor Larsen) and a karakia.
Afternoon
tea
ended
the
proceedings.

WEATHER
OCTOBER
October was a bit of a mixed bag
weather wise, with high winds, a
thunder storm and not a huge amount
of rainfall, and warm. A nice change
from the cold frosty mornings in July.
Rainfall recorded at our place in
October was as follows: 3.5ml on the
2nd 37.5ml between the 5 th and 9th,
8.5ml on the 14th and 15th, 16ml on
the 24th and 32ml between the 27th
and 29th . The total rainfall at our
place for the month of October was
97.5ml over 12 days.
Derek recorded in Hakaru, 80.5ml over
12 days.
The highest recorded in October at
our place was 215.5ml in 2021.
The lowest recorded was 12ml in
both 2010 and 2013.
NZ is entering a La Nina weather phase
which means higher than normal
temperatures and when the rain comes
it will be in short heavy bursts
apparently. The gardens and farm crops
will appreciate the rain.
Take care, Karen

GARDENING AT ONERIRI PLANTS
NOVEMBER FLOWERS:
Salvia discolor: A rare native of the Peruvian Andes it seems to love my Kaipara
garden.
A sea of poppies across the garden
Golden aquilegia commonly known as columbine or
granny's bonnet. A short lived perennial you should get 3
years out of it and if it's happy it should self sow.
My favourite penstemon: Had her for years and have no
idea of her name. Has a finer leaf and a more delicate growth
habit than most penstemon
Our Chicken House: Purple and pink penstemon in front of
the chicken's cottage. The rose on the roof is Madame Leonie
Viennot and the tree behind is a magnolia grandiflora.

ALBIE'S DEN
Albie's Den proudly celebrated the re-opening of our new location on Saturday
the 15th, joined by the Northland Rescue Helicopter, Maungaturoto Fire Brigade,
Coastguard, and many others who came to support the day. We were honoured to
have Marj Paton, and her family perform the official opening. A heartfelt thank-
you goes to RRT for their generous donation from the amazing food provided, to
our hardworking volunteers for their ongoing dedication, to the Ruawai Lions for
their firewood donation, and to Kaipara IT for donating a computer. Most im-
portantly, we thank our community for their continued support — we couldn’t do
any of this without you.
Albie's Den is a community-driven charitable hub that raises money for local
health, wellbeing, and emergency services by selling donated goods and repairing
items for reuse. Since opening, it has contributed over $600,000 to causes such as
the dementia unit, hospice, Coastguard, St John, and the rescue helicopter. Run
entirely by volunteers, The Den provides a place for people to connect, share
skills, and support one another while keeping goods out of landfill through reuse
and repair. What began as a casual space for a “yarn and a cuppa” has grown into
a major source of support for the Otamatea community, strengthening local ser-
vices and bringing people together through practical giving.
Albert “Albie” Paton was the heart and driving force behind The Den. A
lifelong servant of the Otamatea and Maungatūroto community, Albie helped es-
tablish The Den from the ground up, turning it into a place where people could
gather, repair and reuse items, and support one another. He spent countless hours
travelling to collect donated goods, sorting tools and furniture, and keeping the
doors open with his trademark dedication. Under his leadership, The Den grew
into a major charitable hub, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for local
health, rescue, and community services.
Albie’s vision was simple but powerful:
create a place built on generosity, hard
work, and community spirit. Today, The
Den continues to stand as a reflection of
that vision. His passing in 2025 was a huge
loss, but his legacy lives on in every dona-
tion made, every item repaired, and every
person helped. The Den remains what it is
because of the foundation he laid — a true
testament to his kindness, determination,
and lifelong commitment to helping others.

ALEX TETZNER
In the past month we
have lost a long-standing
(40years) and esteemed
member of our Rotary
club – Alex Tetzner Paul
Harris Fellow. Alex was
inspirational
in
both
Rotary and life. Whenever matters were
discussed, he was both calm and
respectful. The hospitality that Alex and
Lyn offered
was
huge.

Alex

treasure the memories we have of Alex.
EXCHANGE STUDENT
Our exchange student, Alina, will have
a busy couple of months ahead of her.
For 10 days in November she will be
travelling with fellow in-bound students
throughout the central and west part of
the South Island where she will have
the opportunity to take part in some of
the activities that Central Otago is noted
for. A week after her return she will be
travelling to Norfolk Island to spend the
Christmas Holidays there.
On her return to New Zealand in late
January, Alina will join another host
family in Dargaville and will attend
Dargaville High School until her return
to Belgium in July. Alina certainly
made an effort to fit into the school and
was able to participate in a number of
activities, including Olla Podriga (a
student talent quest) by playing her
trumpet, both solo and in a band. Her
willingness to take part in the Beast (the
cross-country run over difficult terrain
in the Bay of Islands) showed her
resilience. We really enjoyed her
presentation about the country and
culture of Belgium.
Thank you to Murray, Jane and Jaime
for the manner in which you have
supported her through the last six
months. You certainly gave her many
chances to be involved in many
activities which epitomize our culture.
PRESIDENT TIM
You may have noticed President Tim at
the Paparoa Farmers’ Market on a
Saturday morning. Tim is not only
promoting Rotary (and please talk to
him if you would like to be involved in
our Club in any way) but also
promoting the redwood slabs from his
Hawkes Bay property.
He is also selling the shavings from the
offcuts of shingles he is making. This is
like a wooden straw and is ideal for
packing and placement in nesting
boxes. Eric has also provided Tim with
wheelbarrows, ideal for a little person,
made from repurposed wood.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS
We would like to wish you all a happy
and safe holiday period. Take time to
enjoy the simple pleasures that surround
us. Merry Christmas. ~ Eileen

MAUNGATUROTO & DISTRICTS ROTARY
ANNUAL REFLECTION FROM
OTAMATEA ST JOHN AREA COMMITTEE
Thank you to all of you who have supported our St John Area
Committee over the past year.
2025 has seen a few changes but the highlight of the year was the Trash
and Treasure organised by a small group of dedicated committee
members and their partners and friends. We cannot thank you enough
for all you have done for us.
Our St John Shop (Op Shop), in Kaiwaka continues to be supported and
provides us with a steady income. All the proceeds for the above go back into the
community or to support, in a small way, our local ambulance.
This year we are proud to share what our committee uses these dollars for:
Christmas Food Parcels to: Kaiwaka, Maungaturoto, Paparoa, and Tinopai.$4k
Scholarships for Training / Study / Apprenticeships x 4 $6k
Xmas day lunches for those without families at Maungaturoto
Free hall hire for community groups at Maungaturoto and Kaiwaka
Free sessions of 3 Steps for Life
AED installations and Maintenance across the Otamatea Area -Tinopai to
Hakaru. These cost around $2k each and we have put up around 20 over the years
in this community
Sponsored First Aid Course
Repairs and Maintenance of buildings
Small asset purchases for Operations staff
Cleaning of both the Maungaturoto and Kaiwaka station and halls.
Treats for our volunteers and operations staff
Subsidy for the Linking Hands foundation at Maungaturoto
As you can see, this is quite a list and there will be some I have forgotten about.
We are a small committee of 6 with our focus on our community and how we can
help.
We cannot do this without your support. Thank you once again for all you have
given. Let us know if we can help further. ~ Eileen

BRYNDERWYN HILLS - SH1
NZ TRANSPORT AGENCY WAKA KOTAHI
State Highway 1 over the Brynderwyn Hills is now fully open and ready for
summer travel ahead of
schedule!
Roadworkers finished all
the
resurfacing
work,
reinstated the passing lanes,
and restored the 80km/h
speed limit. Their teams
worked day and night with
a finely tuned programme
to keep everything on track
and completed the project
well ahead of schedule.
Delivering
this
work
involved: 160 people on the
ground;
4,500
hours
worked over four days;
3800 tonnes of asphalt
applied; 115 round trips in total to get the asphalt to site. That is nearly 28,000km
travelled just to get the asphalt to site!
Nine different crews also completed maintenance tasks - vegetation control,
removing litter, drainage maintenance, guardrail repairs, wire rope repairs,
retaining wall inspections and sign replacements and cleaning.
NZTA: “Thanks for your patience while we improved SH1, and to the
roadworkers for their great work’.

top of the list of things to do.
I would like to acknowledge the staff, whānau, students and community members

amazing experience with ever changing scenarios. Lots of challenges and lots of
growth have provided me with a different lens to see how schools run. A special
thank you to Katherine Brown and Cathryn Stevens for our work together this

KAIWAKA LIBRARY
CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS
We will be closing for two weeks as usual over the Christ-
mas/New Year period. Our last day will be Monday 22 De-
cember, 4pm to 6pm, and then we will reopen on Monday 5
January, also 4pm to 6pm.
Do stock up on reading material before we close, so you
don't run out. Overdue items can be renewed, and you can
return the ones you've finished with while we're closed via
the returns slot by the door - I will be clearing that while
we're shut so it doesn't get full.
If you have any questions or problems, get in touch by email
or phone - details below. The library phone diverts to my
mobile if it's not answered, so just let it ring a bit longer if
it's not answered straight away.
DARGAVILLE BOOK SWAP
The swap didn't go as planned at the start of this month, and
has been rescheduled for Tuesday 2 December.
BOOK REVIEWS
I've read a number of excellent library books since I last
wrote...
Newcomer and A Death in Tokyo by Keigo Higashino, #2
and #3 respectively in the Detective Kaga series - I'm loving
this series of books about a Tokyo detective who sees things
others miss about the world around them.
Legacy by Chris Hammer, the latest installment in the
Martin Scarsden series, another excellent
story set in the Australian back country.
Final Orbit by Chris Hadfield, the third
book in the Apollo Murders series, set
around another launching of an Apollo mis-
sion and NASA Flight Controller Kaz Ze-
meckis, this one docking with a Russian So-
yuz mission - but they're not the ones trying
to steal secrets in space!
Prize Catch by Alan Carter, a standalone
story set around salmon farming in Tasma-
nia, and a race for survival.
Picks and Shovels by Cory Doctorow, the
third episode in the Martin Hench series, this
time going back to his college days at MIT
and how he came to be a forensic accountant
- and of course it's not boring as the job
might sound.
See our Facebook page (Kaiwaka Library)
for book reviews and more. ~See you in the library, Wendy!

‘It was an odd Queen's
Birthday weekend from the
outset.
On Friday night, dressed in a
white floaty outfit, bedecked
with pearls, waving my
magic wand and hoping I passed as a
fairy princess, I went to a Royal Night,
or Royal Knight, in the company of a
frog and a queen.
The gathering had a higher purpose
than entertainment - to raise funds for a
dementia
unit
at
Riverview
Maungaturoto, our town's retirement
village and rest home.
When we arrived, the farmer handed
me his car keys and wallet and said,
"I'm going to jump from here." I held
the door open and he was off.
There was something remarkably frog-
like about his movements, but then he'd
been slipping in and out of his Kermit
identity all week. Conversations came
to a halt. People laughed. Even though
his webbed feet fell off and during the
evening he lost one of his ping pong
ball eyes, Kermit won the best costume
prize.
The Queen, meanwhile, soon presided
over an investiture ceremony looking
and sounding every inch a high-ranking
royal. She knighted people with a
wooden spoon for a range good works
for the community and pinned carefully
crafted satin ribbons onto chests.
As is so often said, you have to make
your own fun. This is particularly true
in rural areas.
The highest honour went to
tireless Albie Paton who'd not
only organised the evening but a
massive weekend-long garage sale.
Again the dementia unit, our town's
biggest community project in a long
while, would benefit.
Perfect music was provided by
Otherwise Fine whose members kindly
donated half their fee to the cause.
On Saturday, the farmer and I gathered
goods to donate and headed into town
and the building Albie and his crew
have dubbed The Den. Once a meeting
place for Scouts it's now where
gentlemen gather to build all manner of
things - or morph into busy and
persuasive shop assistants.
No trace of their efforts on the
weekend. The Den was packed to the
gunnels with possibly every item
anyone in our society that's overloaded
with 'stuff' could ever need, and then
some. Naturally enough, we bought a
thing or two.
Sunday saw a much-needed garage
clean-up thanks to the brilliant
assistance of a woman who, if she could
live the life she loved fulltime, would
spend it tidying up other people's
messes.
The upshot was another trip with more
garage sale goods and a new item on
our shopping list. The toaster in our
cabin had blown up. Five dollars
bought a new one. By the end of play,
the weekend's fund had reached a
dizzying $6000. Another sale is
scheduled for the end of June.
Monday: Our garage tidying effort hit a
towering pinnacle when the farmer,
balanced on my car bonnet, dangled a
tennis ball on a string so I'd know when
to stop my car.
As he jumped down, I said, "That
makes me feel so ... middle class."
Although that doesn't really state it.
Settled, grown up, established. I never
expected to have a life that would
involve a dangling tennis ball in my car
shed.
But then, I never expected to go to a
party with a frog and a queen.’

CATTLE DROVING VIA MANGAWAI
A lost occupation, about which we now only have photo’s, pictures, and
memories to remind us. The use of “Cattle Drovers”, and their dogs, to move
herds of cattle from place to place was a permanent position for a selected few.
For 50 years at least, during early European settlement saw those men moving
cows and bulls for people who were setting up their farms and holdings in a new
land. Initial movement of the animals was by sea only, as the country was
covered primarily in bush.
As years passed the settler’s farms grew, as did
their herd numbers. Drovers were hired to take
excess animals to sale sites, which initially was
Auckland. That meant moving cattle along
beaches and beach fronts, and working through
bush where tracks had been made by early people.
Two local men who formed a partnership were
Bob Ross and George Linnell. On one occasion
they planned working from the north, picking up
animals as they progressed along the way. By the
time they reached Auckland they had amassed
1,000 head of cattle, which caused a ‘glut’ on the
market, and they didn’t get value for all those
many weeks of hard work. They learned a hard
lesson, however!

ushered along the beach below Heather Street,
